Applying to be a Junior Counselor (JC) at Buck's Rock requires having been a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) at Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp for at least one summer, in addition to high recommendations from the CIT Guidance Counselors and Shop Heads. The selection process is competitive as being a Junior Counselor at Buck's Rock is not simply a continuation of being a CIT: we consider JCs to be full staff members, with all the privileges and most of the responsibilities of a full counselor. We expect the same dedication, sense of responsibility and integrity from JCs as we do from every counselor.
In addition to the work in their specialized arts, music, theater or other activity area, JCs are also assigned house duty (guidance assist) responsibilities to one of the houses or cabins, and/or other assignments, as deemed necessary, which might involve work in other areas of the operation of camp. As a member of our staff, all JCs are expected to participate in the full staff orientation, which takes place the week before campers and CITs arrive.
We offer JC applicants the opportunity to join our talented group of instructors based on our opinion that the applicant is skilled and mature enough to serve as a staff member. JCs help teen and junior summer campers develop their skills and interests and are encouraged to propose and implement ideas of their own and to show initiative as they work in concert with the rest of the staff. As a staff member who has experienced the "other side", the JC's experiences as a camper and CIT are extremely valuable to better understanding the needs of the program and our campers. We truly rely on the individual and collective contributions of our JCs to the success and the unique spirit of Buck's Rock.
