I'm a pottery-making, sea-chantey-singing, program director.
YEARS AT BUCK'S ROCK: 15 summers over the course of 18 years: 4 as a camper, 2 as a CIT, 9 as staff.
CURRENT POSITION: Program Director
HOMETOWN: New York City
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT AT BUCK'S ROCK? I teach art at a public elementary school in Amherst, Massachusetts, and I love it.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? A teacher! Though it took me a while to figure out that I wanted to teach art.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD? Pasta. Any kind.
FAVORITE THINGS TO DO: Teaching, learning, teaching other people about teaching & learning, making art, geeking about old sailing ships and folk music.
FAVORITE SAYING: Time exists so that everything doesn't happen all at once; space exists so that everything doesn't happen TO YOU.
FAVORITE BUCK'S ROCK SHOP: Ceramics! I worked in that shop for many years.
LITTLE-KNOWN FACT: I have an archery instructor license, and will sometimes teach archery at camp.
WEIRDEST PERSONAL TALENT: Finding exactly the right sized storage container for whatever amount of leftovers I have.
BEST PART OF YOUR JOB: Helping staff learn how to teach, and hearing their teaching stories.
FAVORITE ICE CREAM FLAVOR: Raspberry sorbet and anything chocolate.
PROUDEST MOMENT: When a student tells me they've mastered something that they didn't think they could do at first.
FAVORITE CARTOON THEME SONG: The tunes my students hum when they're performing their own animated shorts and puppet shows in my art classes.
WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE: The Ceramics shop, either up by the gas kiln or on the front porch.
SECRET AMBITION: If I ever had the time to work on it, I'd love to be a tattoo artist.
OBSESSION: Traditional folk music! I sing old songs, and I organize folk music and dance festivals when I'm not teaching art. I get especially nerdy about maritime music.
